Midnight Circle Theatre Company debuted last year with Immersive Picture of Dorian Gray and Frankenstein: An Immersive Show at the Crypt in Bethnal Green, both shows were nominated for an Offie and Broadway World award, with Frankenstein winning the latter with Best Immersive Production.  This April they are back with their first production of the year, a site-specific show, Ghost Stories of Antiquary at Longfield Hall, a Victorian hall near Camberwell. Audience members are invited by the hall warden to shelter from the London Blitz as four mysterious strangers decide to swap ghost stories to pass the time. Delving into tales of witchcraft, occult rituals, hauntings, and all things supernatural, as the night draws in, and the storm outside rages, are there perhaps more to these storytellers than meets the eye?

Director, Nicholas Benjamin comments:

“To me there is something primal in nature about the act of telling ghost stories. It’s something we can trace back to our ancestors, who first gathered around campfires and told tales of their departed. It’s something which has stayed with us throughout the ages and which we are still thrilled by. To me M.R. James has always stood out from the list of legendary horror authors, he was writing at a unique time, the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century was a time of great scientific discovery and yet was still one of the most popular times for spiritualists and ghost stories.
This combination of the scientific and the supernatural gives M.R. James’ tales a striking realism, where the protagonist tries to explain away the horror before being forced to accept it. To me this human realism is what makes M.R. James tales terrifying to this day”.

Midnight Circle Productions are thrilled to be taking on the literature Grandfather of ghost stories, M.R. James. Inspired by his tales Lost Hearts, The Ash-Tree, The Mezzotint & Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad.
